the first WVPA conference (the name 'congress' was not used until the third meeting) was held in utrecht in 1960 and the last wvpa congress was held in verona, italy in 2023.

About Second WVPA Africa and Middle East Meeting - Cairo 2024

Poultry farming plays a significant role in many countries in the Middle east and Africa. the sector provides livelihoods for millions of people and is a primary source of protein for the population. the emergence of poultry diseases such as avian influenza, newcastle disease, and infectious bronchitis presents a major challenge to the industry and affects trade and food security in the region.

  • The implementation of robust surveillance and monitoring systems is critical to the successful management and control of emerging poultry diseases.
  • Early detection of outbreaks is crucial for preventing the spread of disease and implementing prompt responses.
  • The establishment of successful surveillance networks requires the collaboration of government agencies, veterinary services, research institutions, and international organizations.
  • The transboundary nature of many poultry diseases necessitates investment in research and innovation as well as international cooperation to gain a better understanding of the dynamics of emerging poultry diseases and to develop effective control strategies.

Egypt

Where it ALL begins

It’s 2490 B.C., and wooden boats cruise along the Nile River in Egypt while thousands of workers stack giant stone blocks into a pyramid. Pharaoh Menkaure is commemorated by this 200-foot-tall structure. This pharaoh’s father, Khafre, had a 450-foot-high pyramid built nearby and his grandfather, Khufu, had built the Great Pyramid of Giza -the largest of the three- at about 480 feet. Covered in polished white limestone, the pyramids glow in the sunlight.
Egyptians who built the pyramids helped create a culture that would last more than 5,000 years, becoming one of the world’s longest-lasting civilizations. We are still astonished by the art and engineering created by the ancient Egyptians during that time.
A country’s history goes back as far as the 6th–4th millennia BCE, making Egypt one of the oldest countries in the world. Known as the cradle of civilization, Ancient Egypt brought writing, agriculture, urbanization, organized religion, and central government into being.

Egypt: A Classic Vintage of History and Civilization

Egypt is a classic vintage of history and civilization, home to unmatched tourist and historical attractions. Travelers from around the world visit to explore the Pyramids and the Sphinx and see the remnants of the ancient Egyptian civilization’s kaleidoscope of Islamic, Coptic, Roman, Greek, and Pharaonic influences. Art and temples abound in Egypt, and the stretches of scenic beaches are a magnet for sun lovers. Visiting Egypt at least once in a lifetime is a must for everyone.

Each city casts its own spell. Some boast old temples, while others feature immaculate handicrafts. Despite these differences, they all radiate history, culture, and dynamism. An amalgam of beauty, warmth, and holiness, Egypt is the heart of the Arab world. The global archive of Egypt has spawned civilizations and baffled many people who celebrate it. Indeed, it is the capital of art, life, culture, science, and religion.

Where is Egypt located?

Egypt is located mostly in North Africa, but part of its Sinai Desert is in Asia. With a total area of 1,002,450 square kilometers, it is the 31st largest country in the world, stretching 1,024 kilometers from north to south.

What is the capital of Egypt?

The capital of Egypt is Cairo, also known in Arabic as Al-Qahirah, meaning “the victorious.” Built around the Nile River, Cairo is one of the largest cities in Africa and has served as Egypt’s capital for more than 1,000 years.

What is Egypt famous for?

Egypt is famous for its ancient civilization and its monuments from the pharaohs, such as the Great Pyramids of Giza, the Great Sphinx, the Egyptian Museum, the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM), Sakkara, and Dahshur. In the south of Egypt, notable monuments include Luxor Temple, Karnak Temple, Abu Simbel, the Temple of Hatshepsut, the Valley of the Kings with the tomb of Tutankhamun, Edfu (Horus) Temple, the High Dam of Aswan, and Philae Temple. There are many other emblematic attractions across the country that should not be missed; this is just a summary.

  • Ancient Egyptians called their homeland Kemet, meaning “black land.” This refers to the dark, fertile soil left behind after the Nile River floods.

  • Cleopatra, Egypt’s last pharaoh, lived closer to our time than to the time when the Giza Pyramids were built.

  • Khufu’s Great Pyramid is the largest of the Pyramids of Giza and the last standing ancient wonder of the world.

  • Djoser is known for several firsts, including building Egypt’s first pyramid, the Step Pyramid of Djoser. His pyramid is located near Cairo, in Saqqara.

  • In Cairo, the Giza Pyramids are undoubtedly among the most famous, but they’re unique in their own right. The Great Pyramid of Giza is one of around a hundred pyramids in Giza and just one of 144 pyramids built across Egypt.

  • Sphinxes are mythical creatures with human bodies and lion heads. Sphinx figures were often used in tombs and temples. All are unique, and some even have wings. When you travel through Egypt, keep an eye out for these giant creatures with human bodies and lion heads.

  • Seven UNESCO World Heritage sites are located in Egypt: Abu Mena, ancient Thebes and its Necropolis, historic Cairo, Memphis and its Necropolis, the Nubian monuments from Abu Simbel to Philae, the Saint Catherine area, and Wadi Al-Hitan, or Whale Valley, where fossilized whales can still be found.

  • Ancient Egypt negotiated one of history’s earliest peace treaties, the Kadesh Peace Treaty, in 1259 BC with the Hittite Empire. In 1970, Turkey’s government donated a copy of the treaty to the United Nations, which is displayed in the chambers of the Security Council.

  • Ancient Egypt produced the world’s first prosthetic limb, a toe composed of leather, wood, and thread, dated between 950 and 710 BC.

  • Among the many inventions the ancient Egyptians made are paper, pens, locks and keys, and toothpaste. Their toothpaste was made from ingredients like rock salt, flowers, pepper, and mint.

  • Ancient Egyptian astronomers created a calendar similar to ours, based on the sun’s rotation. They are believed to be the first civilization to measure a year using 365 days divided into 12 months. They were also math geniuses; historians believe that division and multiplication were developed by them. This mathematical prowess was crucial for constructing the pyramids.

  • Archaeologists are still discovering new meanings for Egyptian hieroglyphics, which have existed for thousands of years. Hieroglyphs were some of history’s first written languages, allowing the Egyptians to create the first comprehensive history of the world. Back then, there were no books, so keeping records required writing on papyrus scrolls and stone tablets. Egypt did not develop an alphabet until 3200 BC, after scribes invented symbols to record sounds. Hieroglyphs are carved in temples and tombs to record names, dates, battles, and instructions for afterlife passage.

  • Mummification was a vital process for Egyptians who believed their souls would enter the afterlife after they were mummified. As a result, tomb burial chambers were filled with everything people needed: food, games, and even underwear!

  • Ancient Egyptian mummies were covered in bandages stretching for 1.6 kilometers.

  • In ancient Egypt, cats were considered sacred animals, which is why they were popular pets.

Prof. Dr. Celia Abolnik

Chair in Poultry Health and Production
Department of Production Animal Studies.
Veterinary Science Faculty at the University of Pretoria, South Africa

Celia Abolnik (née Stipinovich) obtained her PhD (Zoology) through the University of Pretoria in 2007. She was appointed as a junior researcher at ARC-OVI in 2000 and successfully applied for a senior researcher position in 2003, which she held until July 2012. Her research at ARC-OVI focused on avian influenza and Newcastle disease. In August 2012 she was appointed as the Research Chair: Poultry Health and Production in the Department of Production Animal Studies, which is funded by the Southern African Poultry Association. She is considered a sub-regional expert in avian influenza, is the South African representative of the OIE’s OFFLU network and is the author of 30 scientific publications.

Research:

Highly pathogenic strains of H5- and H7-type avian influenza (HPAI) periodically emerge from the poultry population, causing highly infectious and lethal disease in both poultry and humans. South African ostriches have been affected by numerous outbreaks of HPAI H5N2 and, more recently, low pathogenic H7N1 influenza (LPAI) – with disastrous economic consequences. Monitoring wild bird populations (the natural reservoirs of the precursor LPAI viruses) is an important activity, complicated by the lack of predictability of movements of sub-Saharan duck species compared to the populations of the northern hemisphere. When transmission occurs, the ostrich thus far appears to be the only non-gallinaceous terrestrial bird that is capable of converting LPAI to HPAI. The mechanism of this conversion and the potential of the ostrich to produce potentially pandemic human influenza strains is a key focus area. Identifying the sources, strains, epidemiology and pathogenicity of and vaccine efficacy against poultry pathogens such as infectious bronchitis virus, salmonella, mycoplasmas and avian paramyxoviruses in both South Africa and other parts of Africa remains a priority, since outbreaks regularly compromise sustainable livelihoods of resource-poor communities.

Prof. Dr. Munir Iqbal

Head of the Avian Influenza and Newcastle Disease group at The Pirbright Institute and a visiting professor at the Royal Veterinary College, London.

Professor Munir Iqbal is the Head of the Avian Influenza and Newcastle Disease group at The Pirbright Institute and a visiting professor at the Royal Veterinary College, London. Munir obtained Veterinary Medicine and MPhil degrees in Pakistan and a PhD in Biotechnology at Imperial College London in 1991. He worked as a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Liverpool and the University of St Andrews before joining the Institute in 1996. Currently, he is leading several research projects aimed at defining the impact of genetic changes on the ability of avian influenza and Newcastle disease viruses to evade immune responses, cause increased disease severity, and allow cross-species transmission. Along with unravelling the host factors that determine avian-origin influenza virus replication fitness in mammalian species. He is also leading the development of new multivalent vaccines and diagnostics for better control of avian respiratory viruses like avian influenza, Newcastle disease, avian adenovirus, and avian metapneumoviruses.

Recently, his group has developed a novel targeted antigen delivery vaccine platform that selectively delivers vaccine antigens to chicken immune cells, inducing faster, stronger, and more durable immunity. The multivalent vectored vaccines he developed include recombinant NDV, recombinant herpesvirus of turkey (rHVT), and recombinant duck enteritis virus (rDEV), providing robust immunity to chickens against multiple avian viral diseases. The multivalent subunit vaccines produced in insect cells also protect chickens from several poultry viruses. He also developed a passive immunization approach to protect poultry from AIV. His recent studies have identified antigenic epitopes on the hemagglutinin antigens of H5, H9, and H7 AIVs that induce protective immune responses, with implications for vaccine strain selection. His group is developing novel easy-to-use aptamer-based diagnostic tests allowing rapid, sensitive, and reliable differential diagnosis of avian respiratory viruses at the pen-side or point-of-care.
